Q. How does search engine optimization work?
As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. from Wikipedia
There are a lot of search engines on the Web--more than just the big 3 (Google, Yahoo!, and Bing). Search engines provide a service that is paid for by advertising. They have rules about how sites are "crawled" for info, "indexed" for reference, and "ranked" in importance then listed on their search results pages somewhere in the lineup.
